Changing trends in sulfur emissions in Asia: implications for acid deposition, air pollution, and climate.

In the early 1990s, it was projected that annual SO2 emissions in Asia might grow to 80-110 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. Based on new high-resolution estimates from 1975 to 2000, we calculate that SO2 emissions in Asia might grow only to 40-45 Tg yr(-1) by 2020. The main reason for this lower estimate is a decline of SO2 emissions from 1995 to 2000 in China, which emits about two-thirds of Asian SO2. The...

Baseline Assessment of Acid Deposition in Northeast Asia

Asia is experiencing rapid economic and population growth. It is estimated that by the year 2010 over 4 billion people will be living in eastern Asia and the Indian sub-continent. Additionally, these countries are experiencing phenomenal economic expansion. For example, China has experienced 9.5% growth in its GDP between 1980 and 1990 (Hoffman, 1994). This rapid growth in the many Asia economi...

Acid Deposition and Precipitation

Acidic pollutants can be deposited from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface in wet and dry forms. The common term to describe this process is acid deposition. The term acid precipitation is used to specifically describe wet forms of acid pollution that can be found in rain, sleet, snow, fog, and cloud vapor. An acid can be defined as any substance that when dissolved in water dissociates to y...

The assessment of Acid concentration and Wet deposition in Spring and Autumn Rainfalls in Mashhad

Acid rain has been a big problem for urban area during recent decades. Acid rain comes from high concentration of air pollutant, including man made or artificial and natural, in the atmosphere. Mashhad, as the biggest religious town in Iran, has also been imposed with this problem. In this investigation the samples of rains during autumn 2002 and spring 2003 are analyzed. The results showed tha...
